Grand Mosque designs for Denmark
Grand mosque , designs released by BIG
Designs for Denmark's first purpose-built grand mosque have been released by architects Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG) as the local council gave approval to the development plan
Construction of the mosque is expected to start within a year. The 4500 m? mosque incorporates a prayer hall for 3000 people, shops, conference facilities, a gallery, an auditorium and an Islamic library.
"Our purpose was to design a Danish mosque as an interpretation of the Islamic architectural and cultural tradition adjusted to the Danish context - the same elements that we know from traditional mosques in the Arabic world, adapted to Danish climate conditions and lighting," said founder and creative director, of BIG, Bjarke Ingels.
The mosque will be at the centre of a 124,000m? development, which is being part-managed by the Muslim Council of Denmark.
The council will start fundraising activities among the Danish and international Muslim community, foundations and organisations in the coming months.
The design is part of a wider community development.
According to the architects, the mosque design is rooted in modern Scandinavian tradition and strongly inspired by Islamic architecture. As a long ceramic wall folding around itself in a cascade of five edges, the mosque spirals 46 metres towards the sky.
