AcE-Bs 2011 Theme: 'The Other Space' - Policies, Culture and Human Behaviour
Cross-fertilizations of multi-disciplinary contributions to
Environment-Behaviour Studies (EBS) have been enormous in uncovering
the secrets of reciprocal behavior relationship between humans and the
environment. Amongst issues that had transpired from the studies
include the implementation of policies in urban areas upon
sustainability, welfare, and quality of life of the community.
Policies and progress in the complexity of the globalized world, in
which traditional and modern cultures stand side-by-side, often in
complex mixes have created 'The Other Space' (TOS) in layering urban
spaces. TOS emerges as a residual effect of human endeavour for
progress in both the developing and developed countries.
The ever increasing progressions in development tend to pose greater
challenges to the natural limitation of humans in adjusting to change
and coping with those 'transgressions' in their daily life. Rules
being politically created may represent the quality of life which
envisioned certain level of progress in human dignity. However, this
ideal condition may not be affordable nor suitable for the society's
less fortunate communities.
How do people respond in reality to the spatial set up affected by
policies and the design of built environment that created no-man's
land community in the urban areas? How do they survive, upbringing and
educating their youngsters, and care their aging and the less-abled,
in those kind of environment where global forces and progress have
dislocated their means of living?
Contributions of behavioral science in addressing the discourse of
inequality, social and environmental responsibility, national pride,
cultural struggle for identity and many other issues created by
economic progress may pose a potential research agenda for EBS. Not as
rhetoric manifestoes but based on reality and continual change towards
the affected community.
With the above as the background, AicE-Bs 2011 invite academicians,
researchers, and practitioners to disseminate their knowledge based on
their empirical findings, highlighting issues pertaining to TOS and
the affected community, with suggestions for possible solutions and
initiatives taken in curbing the issues / problems faced
