The workshop took place in Wuhan from 26 to 28 June 2011. It was held in conjunction with the 6
th 3DGeoInfo conference in the next year.
The workshop was jointly organized by the ISPRS Working Groups V/4, "Image-Based and Range-Based 3D Modelling", III/2, "3D Point Cloud Processing", III/4, "Complex Scene Analysis and 3D Reconstruction", IV/4, "Virtual Globes and Context-Aware Visualisation" and IV/8, "3D Spatial Data Integration for Disaster Management and Environmental Monitoring". Invited by the conference chair, Prof. Qing Zhu, authors
from China and overseas submitted 34 papers on topics related to data collection and processing, 3D model reconstruction and updating, database management and collaboration, 3D exploration, analysis, design, visualization, etc. Following the standards set by previous workshops, each paper was peer-reviewed by at least two reviewers from the scientific committee. After the review process, 12 selected papers were published in a special issue of
Geo-spatial Information Science (GSIS). Oral presentations were made for all accepted papers, which were also compiled in a conference proceedings CD dispatched to the participants of the workshop. The workshop was both vibrant and of high scientific quality.
In the opening session, the workshop participants were warmly welcomed by by Prof. Jun Chen, the ISPRS Secretary General of ISPRS, Prof. Jon Mills, the president of ISPRS Technical Commission V and Prof. Jianya Gong, the workshop host and director of LIESMARS.
The workshop is featured by five keynote speeches delivered by the internationally well-known scholars, including Prof. Thomas H. Kolbe from Technical University of Berlin on the status and roadmap of OGC standard-CityGML, Prof. Sisi Zlatanova from from Delft University of Technology on towards intelligent 3D city models, Prof. Hui Lin from the Chinese University of Hong Kong on the fourth generation of campus map: a case for geospatial cognitive studies, Prof. Long Quan from Hong Kong University of Science and Technology on Image-based Modeling of Buildings, and Prof. Jin-Yeu Tsou from the Chinese University of Hong Kong on Application of performance simulation in the planning for low carbon green city: Sanshan as a case study.
10 single track oral presentation sessions were presented, namely, the 3D/4D representation of virtual environment, Challenges in 3D industry, the semantics based 3D indoor representation and applications, the semantics based 3D city modeling, 3D Data Acquisition I – Data Processing, 3D Data Acquisition II – Reconstruction, Geo-Infrastructures and 3D GIS Platforms, 3D Applications on Planning and Spatial Analysis, 3D Applications on Emergency Management, 3D Visualization.
The workshop were closed by Prof. Hui Lin and Prof. Qing Zhu with a retrospect and prospect speech on the workshop and the development of Virtual Geographical Environment (VGE). Prof. Jacynthe Pouliot from Laval University also gave attendees a warmly invitation to the 7
The workshop participants greatly appreciated the organization and services made by the local organizers and student volunteers. Their great efforts in organizing the technical sessions and social events made this workshop very inspired, informative and enjoyable.http://www.lmars.whu.edu.cn/3DCMA2011/)
