5 Projects: Interview 3 / Matthew Persinger
5 (student) Projects: is a group of projects completed at Yale University's School of Architecture by 5 young architects during their graduate education. Each of the 5 projects are sited in New Haven on or adjacent to Yale's campus. Each project focused on an institutional building, loosely defined by program, type and context. These commonalities became a framework for discussion that illuminated individual polemics and debate about experimentation in today's architectural landscape. Despite the initial appearance of diversity within the set, each architect sought to address a common set of ideas emerging at Yale and perhaps within the discourse of architecture at large.

Madrid, April 2011. Architect Luis De Garrido presented its proposal for the creation of a city self-sufficient, sustainable and bioclimatic in Mondragón (Spain). The project is inspired by the Basque character, their vocation Cooperative gemstones and geodes. The solution aims to show that the rupture of a mountain of Mondragón reveals, in a symbolic way, the precious stones of the Basque people.
The proposal includes the construction of 1,053 social housing, an office skyscraper (20,000 m2), a shopping center (28,000 m2) and a Museum (42,000 m2). Management as well as road and green areas adjacent to the area.
The result resembles Geode combines enormous, and when the overall spray system and water recycling works in summer (to cool the whole naturally), the set resembles a huge waterfall, from which the blocks ( as a gemstone embedded in the quarry) seem to sail. The group is self-sufficient water and energy.

W Hotels has just announced plans for the Namaste Tower, a new W Hotel in Mumbai that is due to open July 2015. To follow the long tradition of great Indian architecture, the striking 984-foot-tall building will house 62 floors combined into a hotel, office, and retail space. The design of the tower is actually meant to reflect the namaste yoga gesture where two wings of the hotel are clasped together like hands greeting the city of Mumbai. The summit of the building will have a quadruple height atrium space which will enclose the Sky Restaurant and Bar with a stunning view of the busy city.

The proposal for the Performing Arts Center in Taipei by American Architectural Studio B+U creates a world-class institution which is characterized by both its response to its urban and cultural environment, and by its formal and structural elegance. The project embraces the concept of a Grand Plaza as being a center hub between the Shilin night market and the TRTS Jiantan station. This is achieved by lifting the multiform theater off the ground and creating a covered outdoor linkage space between Cheng De Road and Wen Lin Road. This linkage space is the center access to the grand foyer and all three theaters. On the south side the Grand Plaza transitions into a garden that gently slopes up towards Jiantan road to allow for shops and restaurants to be placed underneath and accessible from street level. Both the garden and the Grand Plaza provide a large outdoor space for the thousands of pedestrians that visit this area. The shops and restaurants are located along Wen Lin Road and Jian Tan Road and together with the Grand plaza and the garden space embrace Taipei's lively streetscape by creating a continuous experience from the busy streets of the Shilin night market to the Performing Arts Center and the train station.
